I've used a nail set punch. Others use a sewing tracing wheel.

I like the look of a nail set punch better. It looks more realistic to me.

I have used both - very briefly, 10 years ago I did casting (Alumilite) with foil and stamps ( 9 months - 100+ blanks before I developed an allergic reaction to Urethanes - Alumilite). I really liked the foil - easy learning curve. I found uses/applications for the punch sets as well as the sewing wheels, and used both. If I had to start over - I would go for the punch set first.
