Making Bushings

Just wondering if anybody has made their own bushings out of steel. A machinist friend of mine said he could make some replacement bushings that are harder than M2, I think he said M6 or M8. If they are harder than the "stock" bushings are there any cons you can think of. The only one I came up with was it would dull your chisel if you touched it. He claims it would cost very little and all he would need is a set of bushings to follow as a guide.

It seems to me that anytime you hit steel of any grade with a tool it is time to resharpen, regardless of which one is harder to begin with. Tougher bushing will last longer so it seems like a good deal to me. If you hit the bushings with a tool just resharpen and move on . . .
