For my last craft fair I decided to make magic wands thinking kids who saw the Harry Potter movie would buy them. They were nothing special, about a foot long with a neat handle. I made them night before the show so I only had enough time to make four before I passed out. I set the price at 5 bucks. I sold three of them and none of the people buying waanted a wand! The first woman bought it for a music teacher friend of hers to use for conducting. The other woman saw it laying on the Harry Potter book and saw that it was holding the pages of the book open so she bought 2 to keep her cookbooks open to the right page when she is cooking. Go figure

There's a guy with an internet site that sells them in the $50.00 to $75.00 range. Mine are priced at $20.00 and no sales. In my opinion, just turning on your lathe is worth more than $5.00. BTW, my wife and daughter saw the new Harry Potter movie. In it there are new styles of wands, with shapes, wiggles and whatever and not all white.

Yeah I was looking at a wand site (probably the same one) and I couldn't believe the prices! But if there is a markey for that then power too them. I got the wood cheap and I figured I'd feel out the market first to see if they'd sell. I'll probably bump up the price for the next show. I'll have to check out the new movie once I finish the book.

Rev up your magic wand, cast a spell on your intended customers and see if you can 'magically' get them to fork over $50.00. Thanks for laughs.[;)]

I tried that and turned somebody's grandmother into a toad. After that she couldn't open her purse to pay me.

i have a request from a magician friend to turn him a wand. he doesn't want a wizard (stick style), but more of a traditional wand. i'm still working through it. me mentioned that many have screw together fittings in the middle. that will make it easier to do on my mini lathe....i think.

The store clerk who sells my wands tells customers that they will help in finding a better parking place...[:D]

The longest wands are about 14"

That brings up an interesting point...I use to make these wands smaller (10-11" long), intended for the hands of a 6 to 10 year old, and they sold ok. But later, experimented with somewhat bigger wands that would comfortably fit in the hands of a grown woman...and these sell much better. My guess is that it's moms buying wands for the kids...feels good in mom's hand, and that may be all that counts...go figure.
