I tried dyeing a pen with a Sharpie before I CA finished it. The CA lifted a good bit of it off, after letting it get totally dry to the touch. I was using found wood to see if I could get an interesting optical effect. The CA lifted a lot of the ink off, leaving behind a good looking effect, but not the one I wanted. Has anyone tried this, and if so, what did I not do?

i sometimes color my tubes with sharpies. I did a blue one once and the sharpie ink blended in with the ca and made a really nice background for the blank which was blue celluloid.

Sounds like my setup for the Sharpie job needs to start much earlier. I will definitely try waiting it out. When I get the chance to do resin casting I'm gonna look into coloring the tubes. Or with clear acrylic.

I did several pens with sharpies and highlighters a few weeks ago. To get a deeper color, I applied the marker then applied a paper towel with DNA on it. It picked up the color and carried it deeper into the wood, but made it lighter. I repeated the process three times and wound up with a deep color that held when I applied a CA/BLO finish. Blue highlighters on a slightly yellow wood produces a beautiful teal!

A light coat of spray shellac will seal the marker colors -- if you rub the ink will move.

That's useful! I plan on working with this quite a bit, as the high class (expensive) stuff is gonna be harder to sell out where I live. "It looks cool" works way better than "It's exotic wood". I can do a lot of slimlines like that and get en extensive catalog built up on the cheap. I do plan on making more ambitious projects, just have to figure out where to sell them that I can drive to reasonably.
