He was born around 385 AD around the area of South west Scotland or North West England in a fairly wealthy family. His father was a Church deacon as was his Grandfather. When the romans began to retreat from Britain he, at age 16, was captured by Irish pirates and sold into slavery to tend sheep on Slemish Mountain.
After 6 years he escaped and trained for the priesthood in France, took the name Patricius, then returned to Ireland to evangelize the pagan Irish with great success.
He died around 17th March 461 and is supposedly buried about 10 miles from my house.
Half the world celebrates his life on 17th March.

Wonderful summary Alan; that is very close to what I have read. Alas, my Cardiologist recommends I abstain from 'Salty foods" aka - corned beef... It is a favorite of mine and I do miss it. BUT, my wife and I are experimenting with some fish stew recipes which we grew fond of when we were in N Ireland in Oct 2016.

We dearly wish the world would settle down and travel be more available. We are hopeful...

Cheers, Mate.

I used to have a party every year for the equipment design team at work. I would spend all day cooking. I usually made about 6 corned beef briskets, about 10 boiled cabbages, a big pot of boiled potatoes and a pot of carrots. A case or two of Killian's Red and a few bottles of Irish Whisky rounded things out. Maybe someday I will start it up again. - Dave

Real sea salt from mines, not from freshly evaporated sea water, is actually good for you. The refined white stuff is to be avoided.

Redmond Sea Salt is full of minerals that your body needs, without salt you die so a natural salt like this is beneficial for you.

Remember when doctor's advertised cigarettes on TV? Yeah, science changes , real unrefined sea salt from mines is good for you. I buy it in 10 pound buckets.

I share my birthday with St. Patrick's Day. My first name is Bryan and I live on Murphy Rd. I play Trad. Irish Button Accordion. I'm of Russian/Polish extraction but I have always considered my self Irish by accident of birth! Happy St. Patricks day to everyone. Slainte!

Mark, if you ever make it back to the Dark Hedges there are a couple less trees since a big blow a while back.
And there's a welcome here if you come.

Alan

When I worked for TWA we had a supervisor on the ramp, midnight shift named John Murphy... he contended that there were two kinds of people in the world.... the Irish and those who wished they Irish. He was from the old country.

Certainly half the world wants to be associated with Irishness on 17th March.

I recently had some AFib problems, (turned out to be caused by sleep apnea) and my cardiologist ordered a whole bunch of tests. When the results came back he was amazed. He said I had a very healthy heart for someone 79 years old. He said my numbers were better than his were! (And he is 20 years younger than I am.) I asked him "Is this where I tell you I have three eggs for breakfast every morning?" He turned pale, and said "I don't want to hear it!" Apparently some people just have naturally low cholesterol and blood pressure....runs in my family.
