Who'd of thunk it?? A machine gun shoot in Ky. Well i've gotta tell ya, it was freaking awesome. Aparently this is one of the country's largest machine gun shoots. It's only 15 minutes from my house at Knob Creek Gun Range in West Point, Ky. I've tried to make it before but somehow never went. Well after I got home from the Indy chapter meeting I went with my neighbor and a buddy. Both of whom served 3 years in Iraq. It seems the only type of outfit people had on were Camo or really short shorts:biggrin:. It was about 75 degrees and pretty humid as it rained early that day.

There were a ton of vendors there and they had 30 minute shoots every hour and a half. I counted somewhere around 17-20 machine guns on the line. A couple of Dillon Saws which are incredible. A gatlin gun, some cannons, a few 60's, some 50's, and lots of other's that I have no idea what they were. I got to see 1 shoot during the day which was cool. But about the time the sun started going down is when the fun began. They put fifteen 55 gallon drums with a mixture of gas and diesel fuel out about 300 yards away. They also had them hooked to a detonator. The night shoot kicked off with the biggest explosion i've ever seen. They set all the drums off at once. It scared the living hell out of me, and the heat from them was intense. Somehow I forgot my camera to take pics. I don't know if any has heard of this, but it was absolutely awesome. Sorry for the ramblin

Ernie, there are a couple of machine gun collectors at work that talk about Knob Creek all the time. I've seen some of the videos that came out of there. There are some wild weapons out there. They did tag me along once to Atterbury and I got to shoot one of their Thompsons. It took me for quite a ride!

I've seen videos of Knob Creek but never had the opportunity to go. Someday maybe. I've had my fill of shooting full auto but it would still be fun to watch.

The last time I was there(two years ago) a guy had a cannon and fired it one time, through a car, length wise. You can smell the gun powder from a mile away, the noise is deafening, and dust rises from the ground from the vibration. It's fantastic.

Ah! Fort Ord 1964. Wish had a couple of those for our Neighborhood Watch Patrol. We could end the gang problem real easy. The sound of a couple of 50 cals would persuade them them to move on. Learning to fire a 50 cal was probably the most fun I had during training.

Ernie:
According to all reports from MG enthusiasts, Knob Creek really is the Mecca of this sport. I bet being there in person was really cool!

With the price of this ammo, I bet everyone policed their brass very well! No leftovers for pen making:(

I was at Milledgeville, Georgia for the General Lee's birthday celebration back in January. They fired three large black powder cannons at the same time. WOW! what a noise and the smoke was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Thompsons conjure thought of Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelley and others of that period, but I think of all the fully automatics the Uzi would be my choice.

I use to go there with a sack and pick up brass for making my pens, now its against the rules to pick it up, unless it's yours to start with. The range picks it up and sells it.

I found some great deals on live ammo, but nobody was selling casings. I did find a few people selling them but you could get them for the same price online, and those are polished and deprimed. For $8.00 a shell you could shoot any of the machine guns:eek:. I agree as it is the mecca of shoots. They have another one in October, and I'll make sure to take pics.

I heard that it was incredibly crowded this year. Packed first thing on Friday morning which is unusual. Prices were also through the roof on guns. An indication of societies views of the country?

I would disagree somewhat. I went Saturday, and there were a lot of people. Even after we had tornado's hit and crazy weather. It was a mud pit and a lot of people had to get pulled out. But for only a $10.00 admission i'd expect it to be packed.

As for prices, they were considerably cheaper than about anywhere. Now the $20,000 and up machine guns are out of my range, so i'm not sure about those. I was only looking at AR's and some knives. I found some really good deals on the AR's. I cam close to buying one but opted to wait a little as I don't need it right now. I also bought 5 knives, which I saved a little over $100.00 on them all. There was a guy selling his reloaded ammo at crazy prices. 1000 rds. of 308 or 223 for $84.00. I didn't have the nerve to buy them, as i'm not at trusting person on that stuff.

I have heard of an event called boomer shoot don't know if it the same an the one in TN but sounds along the same line.
