Here's a M3 White Titanium Mokume on a Jr Gent 2. It is the chrome version, I'm not a huge fan of the black finial but do like the black band....so....pop out the stock and make a finial I do like. I know the chrome isn't so high end but did think the black band would be a nice pairing. C&C more than welcome! Thanks for looking.

Turning was great, carbide, sanded to 1k and used the two part polish. Really nice material to work with.

I previously turned the same material and posted it in the thread below. The material looks very different on this pen. I actually think it looks nicer with more white or at least with finer black lines. For feedback for M3 I think the finer the black lines the better any of the colors will look.

*Very* nice pen, Warren. . Do they call that "white" ?

I agree that finer black lines look better for all colors of this blank material.

Can you tell me please .... how do you pop out the original finial without damaging the surrounding chrome trim ?

This article by TurboWagon refers to a 2008 article by JohnCrane,

http://content.penturners.org/articles/2008/custom_finial.pdf

which seems to be unavailable (Error 404).

Would there be an archive in which to find the JohnCrane article?

It would seem to answer the question I posed above ... namely how to remove the stock finial from a Gent or Jr Gent 2.

Hmmmm .... I wonder if this is the original thread by JohnCrane:

very nice Warren! I would love to lean how to make the custom finial. Really nice!

Thanks Tony, moving this month and baby coming in October. If I can ever find the time to set up shop in between I'll be happy to show you but the tutorials posted are great guides. Sometime next year I would be happy to do a demo for the club too.

Hey Mal, M3 calls it white, very much silvery to me

I used a block of scrap oak and drilled it out, put rubber shelf liner over it to protect the finish and knocked it out with a punch, really doesn't take too hard of a whack to get it out at all. I keep a couple of the old finials close to the lathe for referencing size as I turn them.

I think this is the nicest one I've seen of the M3 contest!

Very kind of you Bobby!

Thanks for all of the likes, looks and comments folks!

The best cumulative post I've seen on custom finials in Dan M's below. Pay attention to the using the same blank and turning the finial first. Using the cap or barrel end opposite of the centerband joint turn the finial, finish, part off first. Then drill out the blank as usual. Saves time in my book. Ideally using extra on top of the cap will give you the closest grain match.
