Finally had a chance to turn with my new used Jet 1014 and I have to say it is quite a different experience than turning with my Shopsmith. I am not sure why, but it seems way smoother, way easier, and way quieter. I felt like I turned faster and easier as well. Maybe it is all just wishful thinking.

I did actually just use it on top of my bench, which puts it about elbow height, and I think that is a bit too high for me. I might get used to it, but it seems like I have more control if it is a bit lower on my body. I have to build something to stand on temporarily to try it out, and if that works, I have a system in mind that will let me swivel the lathe down under my bench for storage.

You know what we say, "no pics didn't happen...!"

Cheers

Funny you should mention that George... two of the three pens I turned today were with blanks you sent me for the contest a while back. The pics I took did not come out well, so I need to take new ones. :)

Congratulations on the lathe. I do not stand because of poor balance so I use my lathe in a sitting position. The stool I use is 24" tall and places my elbows level with the spindle. It is comfortable and as I have no desire to turn large items such as larger bowls, plates, etc. I know you are going to love your lathe.

I already do like it a lot. I can see buying a true variable speed eventually, but not until I get this one perfected. :) :) I need to get a stool. I have a bench I use, but it is not ideal. I am anxious to get it perfected. :)

Had to upload pics for George. :) BTW.. two of them are from blanks he sent me from one of his first games. They turned AWESOME

1 year ago this month I bought a Shopsmith. I worked on that for about 4 months and then I bought a jet mini 1014 just like you! It is a big difference and much quieter and smoother. but I enjoy drilling my pen blanks on a Shopsmith using the horizontal press. I now have three lathes the third being the harbor Freight clone of the jet 1236 variable speed.
