Here is the story: I glued two poplar boards to make a platter blank. Drilled and mounted it on the worm screw, turned to round with no trouble. However, I neglected to "decorate" the mortise with a couple of grooves to dress it up a bit. OK, then I mounted it back on the worm screw to cut the grooves with the tip of a small skew. Mounted it back on the chuck on the mortise. Turned it on and....things started to drift off the lathe bench! Tried to remount it by turning it 90 degrees. Checked it by manually turning the blank and nothing seems to "wobble" indicating out of round or not square to the chuck body.
Lesson- do all the turning and cutting in the one position before changing the blank on the lathe?
