I loved making pens and bottle stoppers and was proud to give them as presents or sell them. As some of you know, I had to have lower back surgery 2 years ago coming up in Aug. I totally lost interest in my pen making and I'm thinking it's because I couldn't do it for so long and also a little afraid of maybe straining my back. Then economics took a turn and the store I had my pens for sale in closed for good. I just couldn't and sometimes still can't make myself spend money on more blanks, supplies, etc. Cleaning out the spare room yesterday and found my box of beautiful pens I had packed up from the store that closed. Boy, did I get motivated again!!!!! I can't turn here in the summer (120 degrees) but this fall I will pull that box out again, admire my pens and go clean my work space in the carport so I can create again. Sometimes you have to go back and revisit to be motivated again. Just something for those of you who are feeling slumpy to think about...........

I'm very glad you will be turning again, and I hope you can find another outlet for your work! I'm looking forward to seeing what you will be creating!!

Becca, I feel your pain. I'm 7 wks postop from back surgery #2. The months leading up to that surgery was murder on the mind and didn't turn but 1 pen for 5 months. I'm glad you've got your motivation back as I have. Still can't go play for long but I sure have fun when I do. Good luck.

Becca,

Hope the summer will see your back returning to good health!!

Then------ OH BOY, LOOK OUT World!!!

I look forward to admiring your work.

Hey Becca,

I have rods in my back, so I totally know what you're talking about.

Do you have a closet or corner somewhere in the house you can take over? A lathe doesn't take much space. Put some saran wrap on the walls and linoleum scraps on the floor (if carpeted) and work in the cooler house. Use a mini or midi lathe. Harbor Freight's $99 mini benchtop lathe is a great little machine and would fit about anywhere.

We had a discussion here a month or two ago about how to make turning easier on the back and there were some great ideas posted.

Ahhh... Found it: http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60529
