I just went to the doctor today for bronchitus treatment and found out that I had lost 32 pounds from 287 to 255. Figured it must be the turning. I try to turn two pens a night if my lungs allow it. It's the only thing I've changed about myself. I gotta say, turning pens must be healthy for ya!

That's great, most of us, including me, could stand to lose a few pounds around the middle. However..... large unexplainable losses of weight in a relatively short time can be a warning sign of the onset of diabetes. Do a little research, or ask your Dr or whatever, but if any of the other symptoms ring any bells, go get a glucose tolerance test. Diabetes if managed properly can be little more than a nuisance in a long happy life. Ignored or undiagnosed, it can fairly shortly lead to a miserable series of very unpleasant problems, right up till it kills you.

It NEVER hurts to rule something out.

Congratulations on losing the weight. Good thing that you are being tested for diabetes. Being busy at the lathe helps deflect your thoughts or desires to eat. I hope that you are wearing a full respirator to protect your lungs. Please don't turn without a real good one. Save up your money and buy a motorized one to protect your lungs since you have a respiratory disorder.

+1 for what Cindy said. I use a Trend Airshield Pro, and it works great, worth every penny.

Don't worry about the lost weight...... I found it.

Seriously, that's too much weight to lose without trying. You should go see you primary care doctor and make sure everything's okay.

Are we not overreacting a bit? He never gave a timeframe. If this is 32 pounds since his last visit a year ago, then this is healthy weight loss (trying or not).

I've lost 2 1/2 times this since February (but I'm trying to lose). I did see my doctor in August and had a clean bill of health but was encouraged to keep losing.

Just some clarification for eric, I weighed 287 a month ago.
That is 8 lbs a week which might seem like a lot, 1 % a week is considered safe (yours was closer to 3%) but if you have had bronchitis during this time likely your appetite has been suppressed and your body is also burning up extra calories fighting the infection and often times will dehydrate the body to boot. With that said once you drop the water the weight lose will likely level out if you can maintian the diet you had during your illness. Now if your eating habits have not changed and you are still losing weight that is a different story and your Dr. should have picked up on that. Turning pens, unless you have a treadle lathe turning logs down to pens, is not strenuous to contribute to weight loss. However if it gets you off the couch and out of the cookie jar it is worth it. On a personal note my battle has gotten me down 40 lbs in 7 months.
