Once again this year I planned on entering a contest or two but I got both swamped by work and not feeling well and( that has been tough trying to work through it), it looks like I will miss the deadlines again. I am a little more disappointed this year because I had some fairly good ideas. But I just can not find the shop time needed. I hope to at least turn a couple of the blanks I have made up and just post them for fun. Always next year and hopefully I will be fully retired and there will be no excuse.

Good luck to all the entries in all contests and I look forward to seeing some fine work produced from here. Lets see what you all got.

Well if you've wrote off this year but have got some good ideas, you got a year to make them and have them ready for next year. Hard part would be keeping them under wraps that long!

:coffee::coffee: John; If your planning on having more time when you retire, forget it !!!!! Your to-do list will grow by leaps and bounds. You will find that you take more time to just look at the things and people around you that you didn't get the time to before. A trip to the store is no longer an errend but, an an adventure out of the house, where you run into other people to talk to. Life doesn't slow down or stop just because you no longer have a 9-5 job. Now you have the luxury to do what you want, when you want, but it still has to be done sometime. You now have the time to go and watch the grand kids sports, take that ride in the county to see the trees turning in Fall, or work on your pens when your in the mood and can take your time. I wish you a quick and speedy retirement, but don't count on having extra time any time soon. Looking forward to your photos. Jim S

That is for sure, I don't know how I had the time to work at all.

Make your pens as soon as you get the chance and then hide em till next year.

Bob.

Thanks guys. I am sure that retirement will be better than the rat race is now. It has to be. 41 years of doing Construction work (Electrician) has taken its toll on my body and it is the body that is telling me to get out. The industry has changed drastically and it is not for the better. When you walk onto a jobsite for the first time and the first words you hear are that (This jobs in a hole and we need to put our best foot forward to make any money) you know where it is heading. I have seen enough. I look forward to the days of doing the errands and yes maybe get to make a pen or two.

As far as making the pens and hiding them, well that won't happen. I will eventually get around to doing these pens and many more that I have planned. I will post them as soon as they get done. I really was not after the prizes and in fact I probably would have donated them back or found another way to pay it forward with them but would liked to see how I stacked up with some tough competition here. I still feel there are some very talented pen turners here that are just holding back or just not coming forth for some reason. Hopefully some nice work will come out of these contests and I am sure it will. I think that is what is the best thing about the bash.

I am sure I will come up with something for next year and just need to start even earlier. I thought I did this year but family matters, work and being under the weather.

John, I can relate. I also work for a Electrical Contractor. Been in the business over 30 years. I am not in the field but a project manager. Not near as much fun as it used to be. Many jobs are bid at cost or below due to the current market. Then is quite the job to try and make any money. Just a note we were involved with the new Brooklyn Nets arena probably close to you.

Yes Ron that is close. My area is big on Data Centers. Since the World Trade Center incident these have been a huge part of our infrastructure and workbase. They have supplied alot of work for us and sister locals and continue today. Like you said any project today is highly contested because work picture has not been good throughout NJ. Everything came to a screaching halt with the recession. The trends I am seeing on jobs is disturbing and not condusive to safe enviroment. Just in the past month we had two members seriously injured from falls of 30 feet on 2 different jobs. Both are under investigation. Electricity is not something to take lightly and some of the safety regulations are being laxed just to get these damn jobs done. The light in my tunnel is getting brighter every day. I am not looking back.
