Somewhere I heard that there is a mandrel that can hold 1 blank without the live center holding on the right. I would like to make a line of desk pens with no caps or clips.

]A pin chuck will certainly "work", but because JRC mentioned a desk set I imagined a long tapered upper end.
It would be difficult to do that with a pin chuck and no support by a live center for most of the tooling.
If you look at Russes method, chances are there won't be a need to purchase anything else other than a 1/4" bolt.(that's how I made mine)
