I use godaddy, I have 9 or 10 domains with them, and a couple of dedicated Linux servers, I've had a real good luck with them never any complaints, they even called me to discuss how I can consolidate my stuff to save me some cash.

I know there are those that don't like them but I never had any problems.
There was this one time that they implemented some security features that broke the forms on a lot of sites but it was fixed in about 3 days, and it never happened again.

You going to make your own site? Or have someone code it for you?

Go Daddy, Yahoo, or even Google usually have very good hosting rates, very good customer service AND you are not tied to any proprietary software. This means you can use any software you know how to use and upload it.

Looks like I have to be making it my self. Long story short the person who SHOULD be doing it, has the skills to do it, who is half owner of the business (But does not want any part of it) is being passive aggressive again. This means if I want it done I will be doing it all myself. If my dad can set his up I can do ours.

I have my hosting through Yahoo...they have a very simple templating package that was even easy for me (and I beat my head against several others first)

Mine is cheap, as in free! I use Weebly as do a couple of others at IAP. It was pretty easy to set up, no code, and I like the look. Click the link in my signature to look at mine.

Finding a good hosting company can be a pain. I've had quite a few nightmare experiences with hosting companies through the years. 'Cheap' is not what I would be looking for if it was for my 'business'. As they say, you get what you pay for and in the hosting industry, that is especially true. A 'cheap' host can easily cost you more time and money in the end.

I personally would not touch godaddy hosting. I've used their VPS and standard plans myself, and set many a site up for others on Godaddy. I have found their customer service to be severely lacking, their servers overpopulated and the control panel absolute garbage.

Hosting is a very competitive business. You will come across many sites that will offer you the world. Just be aware that a lot of that shiny copy they feed you is misleading. For instance 'Unlimited Bandwidth', 'Unlimited Drive Space', 'Unlimited Addon sites'. Don't believe it, nothing is truly 'unlimited'.

That being said, if you're site is just a simple information site that gets low traffic any reputable company will do.

When looking for a basic hosting plan, in truth, I would not focus the majority of my attention on what they offer on the 'server'. Reason being is most basic or 'standard' plans offer the same things. The only thing I make sure of is they provide Cpanel or Cpanel Pro. (With installatron applications installer if plan on using a CMS)

Once I've checked that off the list I look more towards their customer service. Do they offer phone support? If so what are the hours. Do they run a 'ticket' system for Email. If they do is it 24/7? I will usually see if I can fill out a form and give them a technical questions just to see what the turn around is and how well they answer my question.

Is there a forum? If so is it active.. What's the 'vibe' of the forum, if you see a lot of complaints it might be time to move on... Also be aware some companies might try and hide complaints on their forum. (caught lunarpages doing this). If they pass all that I'll finally call and ask questions. This will show me how quickly phone response is and if they are outsourcing. Talking to someone can often lead to a better deal on a hosting package as well.

Be wary of the yearly+ contracts. There are many places that will offer you a very 'cheap' price but only if you purchase long term contracts. One to five year contracts are quite common. This can be quite tempting. If you choose to do this be sure the company will reimburse you at ANY time if you cancel the service. I try to avoid this and pay monthly unless I'm absolutely sure of the quality of the hosting company.

This may seem like a lot to check but let me assure you it's well worth the time investment. Nothing is worse than waking up to your site(s) being down causing you to lose money. Then top it off with dealing with horrible customer support the next few hours or even days.

+++ on Weebly

i double up the comment on weebly.com i have my web site on it and it is easy, fast and very cheap. it is free up to a point and you can do quite a bit with for the free rate. there a couple of feature not available for free and there is weebly ads on the bottom of the screen but it works great for a simple straight up web site.

Thanks rob. I called a couple just to see what they said. I got a hold of someone at POWWEB, no one at godaddy. POWWEB were pretty nice on the phone. Answered my questions about down time and security. I will call the others when I get a chance. Too many internet companies only want to be contacted via the internet. I don't have much desire to work with someone like that. This is the only thing I don't like about SQUARE.

My son uses HostGator and I'm currently working on a site for myself with them. At Christmas they had a half off special and I was able to get a 3 year deal for just over $100. It has unlimited domains, disk space & bandwidth. They have templates to use or you can do Wordpress.

Now I do have to disclose the fact my son works there (even though there was no employee or family discount). He started as tech support and in just over a year been promoted up thru tech support ranks and into "Damage Control" (if your contract lapses, he calls to find out what they need to do to keep your business).

Be aware that some hosting technical support is provide by folks outside of th states. While these folks may be very technical, there remains the language barrier when trying to explain the problem you are experiencing.

I use Bluehost and am pleased with them. They have 24/7/365 live technical support by phone, chat, or ticket. The longest I have been on hold with them for tech support has been 3 or 4 minutes. All of their tech support folks are in Provo, Utah and all speak good english. They have everything I want or need in a hosting provider. I actually have 2 hosting accounts with them.
