Looks like it's removable for bearing replacement - a bit of blue locktite would work if it continues...

You will need the special pliers but yes it's that simple.

Before springing for the special pliers, I would just try screwing the dust cover back on with my fingers. You should be able to get it most of the way. If you need to, you could a couple of nails to engage the two small holes to tighten it down the rest of the way.
You could also make your own wrench - use a scrap of hardwood with a hole large enough to fit around the morse taper, and two smaller holes that are spaced to match the holes in the dust cover. Cut some nails and glue them into the holes in the 'wrench', and when the glue dries, you have a wrench that fits around the taper and engages both of the holes. Saves a trip to the hardware store.

finger snug first, then use a small punch or screwdriver at an angle and tap the side of the hole gently with a hammer...don't slip through the hole and hit the bearing!

Yup! It has happened a few times.
As said by many above, Blue Loctite and finger screw it in. When done, I use the two points on a divider in the holes as a wrench (don't have to put too much pressure on it) and tighten it up. So far the Loctite has held it in for a year or two.
Frustrating!!

This happened to my centre when removing from the tail stock when put rod in to remove the rod went into a hole in the morse taper part of centre when tapped this is what happened as my centre was a Sorby one Icontacted them and Sotrby make a part that is a tighr fit into hole so now the split doesnt happen
I don't think it's on a thread it's just a tight fit shaft on a beating

This happened to mine as well. I carefully snugged it tight with small punch in a vise as mentioned above. It has not come loose again. I have noticed that mine heats up after a bit as well. I don't know if they are permanently lubed or if there is a way to make sure the bearings have sufficent lube. I put a sponge around the stationary part of mine and moisten it to cool it down and that has worked fairly well. I don't like moisture on my lathe though so I am very careful. If lubing it does not help it run cooler I may get a heat sink and attach to it. This is my first live center so I am not sure how hot they run normally.

Thank for posting Tony.. I had the same problem. Never thought of loctite..
