I have MS and have very little use of my right hand and fairly good use of my left. I have a heck of a time getting metal lids off cans like acetone and wood sealer. Does anybody know if I can store these liquids in small plastic bottles? Or with it eat right through it.

Scott, I think acetone and plastic don't' go hand in hand together. I think it will eventually softens the integrity of the plastic, therefore, you have mess of the spillage. If you can call the 800# on the can and ask the Manf.. if they know of an alternative container for you that would help you, since they know the strength of their chemicals. The other thing I was thinking is to call container store and ask them if they have any special cap for the containers for people with your type of difficulties. or they may have just the caps that you can replace yours with. there is also a gadget like a big teethed V shape that sits in a circular base then you just push your container lid or cap into it and twist it to open. I know that container store has it ,but not sure if Walmart or target would have them. Good luck man. i hope I could help.

While there are plastics that withstand acetone (such as HDPE), the containers do not make good long-term storage for it. The plastic is porous enough that acetone will slowly evaporate through it.

I make my own gun-cleaning solvent, and acetone is one of the ingredients. I used to store it in HDPE containers until I discovered that the acetone was evaporating out.

Eric

I know first hand that an oil finish will not keep in most plastic bottles. It will eventually harden. I use a glass soda bottle. At Christmas time coke came out with special glass bottles. It works great and no drying out. Any kind of glass bottle with a screw top will work.

Canning Jars may be easier to open with a larger lid. Could always epoxy a bar across the lid that pliers could grab if needed.

I buy my acetone from the salon supply stores (Sally's in my area).

It comes in plastic containers. The best part is the costs is about 1/3, per ounce, of the cost from tool, hardware or paint stores.
