Life update -- resigning my job

It is about 7 months ago when I asked help preparing my resume. You, my IAP friends (and family) poured in assistance from resume writing, job hunting, encouragement and prayers. I got a descent and stable job as a result of that -- thanks to you all.

Last week, I turned in my 2 weeks notice taking effect on Nov. 21 for that job. Sad because most of the people I work with are top notch from the lowest level worker to the upper management both for; the water treatment plant (customer), the contractor and my team (inspection).

The bright side is that I am taking a better position starting Monday (Nov. 24). I will still work for COA (City of Austin) Public Works but with Project Management Division this time. I am very excited with the "promotion" mainly because it will entail more engineering work and is a positive step for my career.

I know this won't have been possible without your help and prayers. From the bottom of my heart (and my family)...THANKS IAP!!! :smile:

BTW, I still cannot turn and seems like my wood allergy got worse. While looking for some blanks to liquidate...my eyes itched and turned red like never before. I am not sure now if I can ever turn again without buying Trend shield (or something similar).

This is new to me on top of my eczema. :frown:
 
The "air-flow" masks are not that bad. I can't turn cocobolo without one and thought I would hate it. Actually, the ear pieces keep out a lot of noise and you "zone out" while you are turning. When you get a chance, try one at Woodcraft or some other place where you can see what YOU think.
 
Had me scared for you there for a minute. Thought something was wrong with the new job. Congrats on the "promotion". Hope you can get some turning time in soon.

Dario, Nice news that things are continuing on an uphill climb for you. It is also one of the most valuable things about this group that it helps in real life as well in our play. Even if you are not able to turn wood, you know this is still home. Good Luck!

This is actually the way allergies generally work. Once you become sensitized your adverse reactions continue to get worse. You need to be very careful.
 
Congratulations Dario. I am excited for you. Especially since it will help you and your career.
I am sorry about the turning problem. I also have coughing spells with a couple of types of wood.
 
Have someone help you clean the shop out from top to bottom (just send it all to me) and then start heavy with the polyester resin. You may not be able to turn wood, but you can still turn.

Dario; I have my 4" dust collector hose right behind the blank I am turning. A 4" PVC pipe will exactly fit most 4" hose connections. That DC sucks up all the chips and sanding dust. It is also pretty good at removing the CA fumes.

I've actually looked at the full face shields and positive air flow units. I'd like one with built in hearing protection too.
 
Dario , I think it's pretty cool that you got that promotion . I also think it's cool that you thank the IAP members for helping you get there . Congratulations on two class A moves . IMHO
 
Dario, count me in on the people that were apprehensive when I saw the title to this thread. I was greatly relieved to hear this was a positive post. Congratulations on the job advance and I hope things continue to go well for you and your family.
 
Good For you! Always glad to hear when good things happen to great people. on the other hand it sucks that you have to stay away from turning. Maybe its time to trade in the lathe for a potters wheel still turning but with a different medium.
 
Scared the crap out of me when I read the title, am soooooo happy for you. Dario I started using a Triton and it filters great. If you want to get back to turning LMK and I'll send it to you to use for a few weeks while I turn acrylic which is 80% of my stock,so I won't miss it .

Thanks for the offer (generous as always) but my lathe is still in the box...probably will stay there for a while since I don't have a space to set it up. I also don't want my hand eczema to flare up so it will most likely stay boxed for some time.

To those who asked...I am a wood guy. Tried acrylic a couple of times, it is nice but not nearly as satisfying as turning wood for me.

Dario, that is great to here. I know when I "left" IAP for a while about 8 months ago that you had some big changes going on in your life. I am glad to hear about the promotion, and I do hope you get back to turning ASAP.
 
Dario, Don't do that to me !!! I had been away from the site for quite a while and I come back to see that title and it scared the heck out of me !!! But I am glad that things are going up for you, glad to hear it happen to a great guy. I am sorry to hear about the allergies, I know that can be a pain, thankfully the only wood that bothers me is Cocobolo, but a dust mask fixes that luckily. But I do have an allergy to a Product called Bayol that we use a lot in my line of work, and it causes some pretty bad rashes for me if I can wash it off right away, which sometime is very hard.. Oh well enough about me. I am very glad to hear about your prootion and look forward to hearing about another promotion in a couple of months.
