It's been a few years, but Jet generally has sales in the spring around March. That's when I bought my 1442... about $300 off the regular price.

I believe that Woodcraft has the Rikon 70-220VSR back on sale for $549.

I would say you have to ask yourself what lathe are you looking for before looking at sales. Then you can narrow the search down. Do you want a 14" or 21" Do you want VS or not.
Just got a Jet 1015 VS for $492 no sales tax and free shipping from cpojettools although the Jet 15% off sale is over. Ordered it Black friday and got it this evening. It's a great improvement over the Jet1014.

I've had the Jet VS 2120 and have a Nova DVR XP, knowing what I know now I would start with the Rikon 70-220 vsr, with that price on it I would be pulling the trigger on it quickly. One word of caution, a lot of people, especially Wooodcraft ones, will recommend Nova chucks, I don't like these chucks--I've had(still have) a Supernova II, but then I got an Easy wood chuck--best thing for turning ever! If you want to go for a more 'typical' chuck, I strongly recommend One Way stuff. Good luck whichever way you go!!
