I was in the shop this morning and was turning a very nice Cocobolo pen. I turned the lathe off to smoke a cig and get a drink and when I went to turn it back on NOTHING, it didnt smell hot or anything before I turned it off it wasnt making any noise either. I opened up the door to where you change the speed (belt and pulley system) and the shaft turns fine. its a Jet 1014 dont know how old it is I bought it on craigslist the guy I bought it from said he had it for about 6 yrs and used it almost every day he said he put a new motor in it about a year or so before I bought it, I think I cant remember. Im thinking either the switch or the solenoid on the side of the motor. Anyone have any ideas? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks Len

My thought was you tripped a circuit breaker. Does your shop have ground fault circuit breakers or plugs? I know that my shop has the circuit breaker type and my garage has the plugs. Sometimes just turning something on pops the ground fault, it hasn't even overloaded the circuits as my outlets are all 20 amp.

Maybe it was mad because you did not share. Or perhaps it was just turned off by smoking and drinking :rolleyes:

The jet switch is a POS. After checking the outlet and circuit breaker, I would check the switch.
 
If you have the obvious power to the lathe via the plug in the outlet, the breaker not tripped and so forth then the culprit is probably the switch. Yes dust sometimes gets in tose switches and needs to be blown out. Also sometimes the toggle part slips free of the contacts. What I have found to work is to push in on the handle as you go to turn the switch on and off. Do this a couple times and should work. This also works when the switch will not shut the lathe off. I suggest you unplug the lathe while doing this though. Good luck.
 
Of course you could always strip the wires and twist them together to bypass the switch, just plug and unplug the lathe and hope nothing ever goes wrong.:eek::eek::eek:
 
I've heard many issues with that lathe regarding the switch...that would be my guess. If you're lucky, it might just have dust in it - try cleaning it first...

Stupid question, but is the yellow safety plug seated firmly in the switch (if that lathe has one, that is)...if those aren't in all the way, the switch won't turn on...

I got it fixed. I had to take the switch apart and take some fine grit sand paper and sand the connections. I cleaned it and then tried still no good, then I took it apart again and took the copper rockers out and made sure they were clean and they were and I noticed the contacts that the rockers touch had some slight burns on them so I took some 600 grit and used a tooth pick and cleaned them put it together and it works fine now. THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!!! The wife had the sharp knife out and I was working with one hand covering the jewels.:biggrin::biggrin:

OR you can put it on a 4-6 outlet strip, with a switch and use that switch to turn it on and off. Then, yours will be wired JUST LIKE mine!!! (for the past five years).

That Jet switch is junk.
 
I agree that switch setup is junk. Luckily I have a older brother that is an industrial electrician and he is checking for a better switch setup where he works to see if one will fall in his pocket. SHHHHHH you didn't hear that from me.:biggrin::angel: or is it :devil::redface:
 
I had to replace the switch on my jet (same issue). I went to the BORG and found a dust and moisture resistant replacement switch for about $3, replaced it and haven't had a single problem since, going on about 3 years now. the switch has a small rubber gasket around the base of the switch that apparently works well.
