Well, I finally discovered why the head stock on my Jet lathe was overheating. It turns out that the shaft was rotating inside of the inner race of the outside bearing instead of the bearing turning. You could see where the bearing race had overheated and the shaft also. It was a new bearing but it just wasn't gripping the shaft as it should. So I took a pointed punch and made 3 prick marks around the circumference of the shaft and reinstalled. I am going to put it back on the lathe this evening and I feel that this will solve the problem. We shall see.
Hope this helps someone else in case they have an overheating problem.

i would think if you could see discoloring on the bearing you should replace it, go to a place that sell better bearings i wound not go to jet they seem to have a lot of problem with bearings on all there tools.

I did replace the bearing with a new one not from Jet. Came from a bearing supply place. And it is much quieter and did not overheat when I got it back together . Works well now.
