A steel faceplate is hard to remove sticky backed sandpaper from, I would mount a piece of wood to it, that's what the screw holes are for. I'd cover the wood with Formica to make it easy(er) to remove the sandpaper.

Thanks so much for inputs. I have the cheap faceplace with a wood disc. at this time. I was thinking a smooth faceplate of steel or aluminum would provide a better surface. I guess I have what I need. Thanks again
There are some folks here that even use the hook and loop disks with great success - the key is to rotate the work while sanding

You are correct you want a smooth surface or the sandpaper will be a bummer taking off. You could seal the wood. But I made my first one with plexiglass but since switched to a thin pieces of sheet metal.
