I have a Jet 1224 not the vs model. Todat I noticed that it won
t start without me giving the handwheel a little encouragement. What is even scarier is that if th spen it backward it will run that way too. Maybe a start capacitor?

Chester, I'm no electrical expert, but it sure sounds like a start capacitor to me. I'm just wondering, with a motor that small, how the capacitor is installed. I have a feeling that it is not as easy to service as a larger motor, like on an air conditioner system. As far as the motor being able to run backwards, I would assume that it has a rectifier that is supposed to prevent it from running but only one direction. I wish you luck in finding the issue.

Just a thought but does the motor have brushes? I'm no expert either, but may be worth checking.
You may also want to check for continuity on the motor windings incase one has burned out etc

Just food for thought

It's probably an AC motor, so either the start capacitor or the start winding in the motor itself. It could just be a loose connection to either, so start there.

A DC motor with tired brushes might not spin up without help, but it won't continue to run in the wrong direction.

Just went through this with my Craftsmen lathe I use for buffing. Capacitor was $3.85 at Graingers. Unfortunately it was the starter winding not the capacitor and was the local motor shop cannot get the parts to fix it.
