'Lathe Dog' question

I want to buy a couple of lathe dogs for my metal. But I'm unsure of how they size them.

If the dog is say '1 inch', is this the maximum diameter that can fit inside it or is it the overall length or something else?

(Lathe dogs are used to clamp onto a round workpieces that are turned between centres. It just means that you don't have to really crank up the centres to hold the metal securely and saves on wear on the lathe bearings)

I don't have any idea of the answer to your question, but ran across somebody who made something similiar to this:

The lathe dogs are only about a fiver each, so I just ordered one of each size they had. 1/2, 3/4 and one inch.

LOL, Yeah I saw the prices. Pretty sure thats why the guy I talked to made his own version. That was the closest thing I could find. He had some kind of grease piston in the head so that when he tightened a set screw it pressed the "teeth" into the work piece. Way outside my area of expertice. Kind of like a steb center on super steroids. Now you'll be thinking about how to make your own, don't blame me for lost sleep.

Skip, Lathe dogs are usually sold by the maximum diameter of stock that will fit in the hole, I sure don't like doing faceplate work on metal.. It's so much easier on wood.

Skip, it's like bitshird says...in the USA at least. For light duty lathe dogs, 3/8" or so flat stock, drilled , tapped, sawn to shape, with a tail bent on the end are effective and cheap!
