I am thinking of replacing my current chuck. I remember reading a review recently of a lot of the current options in a woodworking magazine but can not remember which one and I did not save it. Anyone remember what it was, or what they recommended? I am looking for a bigger chuck than my current PSI one, and one that threads directly to the spindle on my new lathe (1 1/4 -8 tpi). I need an adapter now. Thanks for any help!

I really like my SuperNova 2 chuck. These go on sale at Woodcraft a few times each year. This will hold the largest bowel I'd want to tackle. The Nova pin jaws are my go-to jaws for pens. If you really want heavy duty, you can always go for a Oneway Stronghold, which I've used and like, but I don't think I'd ever need this higher priced unit. I've used Vicmarks a lot in classes and like them too, but they are priced higher than the SuperNova 2.

The Nova jaws will fit all the different Nova (Teknatool) chucks.

Ray,
Quite naturally, everybody will advise about the tool he knows better, that is his own chuck. Personnally I use a Oneway (classic) chuck + a Oneway Stronghold chuck and I'm more than satisfied.

Concur that the Nova 2 is a very versatile piece of equipment.

A caution about the Oneway chucks however. If the chuck is intended to outfit a small to medium lathe IMHO the classic Oneway (or even the OnewayTalon) are more appropriate than the big guy Stronghold. Maybe a query to a Oneway representative could be helpful.

One of these days I hope to upgrade to a Oneway lathe, and I suppose I'd go with Oneway accessories, including the chuck. I just got into turning a little over a year ago. I bought a Nova G3 on sale in the Fall of 2010 at Woodcraft. In fact, I bought it a month before I bought my Rikon lathe! (Waited for it to go on sale). I have been really happy with the G3. When Woodcraft ran a sale on the Nova Midi for $99, I jumped on it(It came with 2 jaw sets, and the local Woodcraft bundled it with the 4 mini jaw set). Having multiple chucks is great. I keep a set of pin jaws on the Midi to drill pen blanks, and swap out other jaws on the G3 as needed.

I would think that if you stick with any of the well-known brands, you will be happy.
