Interesting, when we did shows, I made LOTS of laminated blanks. With exotic hardwoods-usually.
First, they SOLD really well, for a premium price.
Second, the wood cost less in 4/4 than the 12/4 turning squares, so the raw materials for a laminated exotics (I avoided oily woods) actually cost LESS than a cherry or walnut blank (usually).
Suddenly, my wood source started cutting cherry blanks (12/4) and selling them for next to nothing---but that was AFTER we quit shows!! (TIMING is EVERYTHING)
