I REALLY like that idea, but you need to take it to the next step.
Make a center band, just like you did, and use just the band on on a pen with some contrasting wood. Boy, would that look sharp!

Very nice, David!! I like the knot there rather than on the barrels as with your previous efforts. I don't mean to suggest that your previous efforts were in some way less worthy, it is just that certain designs just "click" and blend perfectly. The Celtic knot as a centerband is one such design.
