Anyone ever have a kidney stone? Did you have alot of pain in your kidney area and how long does it take to pass one? Any suggestions that helped ease the pain? I have drank so much water and gatorade I'm about to drown myself.

The reason I ask is I was woke up last night with severe kidney, side and stomach pain and have had it all day today as well. It's bad enough that oxycontin won't even touch the pain. A heat pad does seem to help some. Just curious cause it is also the kidney I have a yet to be biopsied mass growing on and don't want to go the the ER unless it becomes a must do.

I haven't had kidney stones, but one of my co-workers did about two months ago. It took him about three days to pass his after being given medicine by his Doctor. My friend said he passed a stone about the size of a grain of sand, but felt like a watermelon during urination.

Got to the ER now, it may be a stone or it could be your appendix. If it's the later, and it ruptures, you're dead.

I've had stone (technically still do) and they make you very uncomfortable. It's not a pain like getting cut, it just aches and there is no way to relieve it. It's the only time I've ever ASKED to go to the hospital. How fast they pass depends on how big it is, it may not be passable without them breaking it apart.

I've had a few myself. You will be able to tell when it is moving because the pain will move. Your best bet is to go to the ER. You do not want to risk a stone obstructing the ureter. As to the oxycontin- the drug most helpful for a kidney stone is morphine, due to the fact that it will releive pain and dialate the ureter, which will make passage easier.
And the MSO4 (Morphine) can be reversed with Narcan.
Just a thought.

I've passed several and pain usually lasts 12-18 hours. Loritabs (hydrocodone) are the only pain med that helped me but very hot showers help, too. Really miserable pain -- unable to sleep or find a comfortable position in my case.

I 2nd the emergency room recommendation -- some recommend Toradol injection to help with the pain. I never got to this state, but my urologist told me to head to the ER right away if I couldn't urinate at all.

Why not call your urologist or primary doctor? If you've got a renal mass or an obstructing stone, neither is something that you ought to ignore without seeing a specialist. I understand your reservations about ERs, but your health is the most important thing.

Had one about 8 years ago. Pain in lower left side of back. Misery. Went to the ER in the middle of the night. They gave me something to ease pain and relax. I think I passed one, or part of the one that morning. passed another one about the grain of sand size in a couple of days. No pain with that. Haven't had any since.

Hi Dustin,
You've touched on a subject that's impacted my life big-time for the past 6 years. I've had three – all over 6mm – all had to be removed with the camera/grapple combo. You don't want that – trust me. Had the camera/grapple to remove a stone this spring – after I awoke, the Dr told me he couldn't find it. It must of already passed. I told him and my family Dr that there was no way I'd passed the stone – I'd remember that. But they wouldn't okay another scan to find out.

So horrible pain this weekend – a trip to ER. The stone is still there, and has caused a fairly interesting kidney infection after plugging the tube for 5 months. Hoping to have the stone out next week.

You've 'almost' described the classic symptoms – horrible pain in one side radiating to the back and down into the testicles. Usually vomiting, too.

If you go to the ER, they can probably tell if it's a stone via a urine sample. They have some ways of helping you pass it naturally, and they have some excellent 'stuff' to make it bearable while you do.

Good luck – let us know how you make out.

Steve

yes get to your doc/ER NOW. the first one I had, they put me in the hospital with a morphine drip and 2 days later doc said we are going in to blast it. they turned up the morphine wheeled me into the OR and that was the last I remember. Woke up pain free. The next time I had one, not much pain until it got stuck just prior to coming out. Had to pul it out myself; almost passed out that sucker was about 1/2 inch long and was about 1/8 inch thick.
