Hey everyone,
Just wanted to say hello. My name is Jack from Glade Hill Va. I am new to turning. I've been involved with woodworking for several years, but never turned. Can you believe that! Getting ready to retire only 7 more months., Thank the Lord!!
Finishing up my work shop/ man cave, what ever you want to call it. :biggrin:
Stopped by the local Woodcraft store for a pen turning demo, and you all know how that turned out!!:smile-big:
After the demo I picked up a few items that I just couldn't live without, and just had to have, gimmie gimmie, got to have it:cool:
Well after the dust had settled, and the sales person put the fire out on the credit card processing machine, I am now the proud owner of a
$ 2500.00 pen.:befuddled:
All kidding aside Looking forward to the new addition to the man cave, And getting to know some of you guy/gals. I will be asking tons of questions shortly and hope you can help me out. Thanks in advance,
Regards
Flap jack
Glade Hill VA.

it's addictive and fun taking a ugly hunk of wood and getting oooh and awwhs from people - it would be more fun selling more but it will happen eventually - i always keep my eye out for unusual woods just sitting around to turn on pens - being close to the "Bridges of Madison County" and having one of them burn down through arson, i found some of the wood for the original bridge and turned a handful of "historic" pens/pencils - i also retrived a fallen branch from a tree at Notre Dame University and turned it for part of my daughters wedding present - when it was done, the grain looked like a devil's head but i gave it to her anyway - nothing like a devils head pen from a tree at a catholic university! in short, you never know what you are going to get and that is the fun

Welcome Jack. This is a fun hobby and it can be a money hole for sure! Enjoy it!

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.
