They added something about everyone standing together as brothers before they switched to the French version part way through...

Edit: looked it up online - 'we are all brothers and sisters, all lives matter to the great' is what they added..

So clearly a political statement. Without getting into the politics, I couldn't be more disappointed that changing the anthem to make a political statement was something that they thought would be 'ok'.

Hold up there Mr Smart007, it wasn't major league baseball that changed our anthem. The person that changed the anthem, was a singer in the group who wants the anthem changed. He sang louder than the other singers, just so that more people would hear his version. The musical group he belonged to, were very unhappy with what he did. So unhappy that they kicked him off of their group of singers, and that's no little thing.

I disagree with what he did, I see no reason for the anthem to change. I've lived most of my life with the anthem we've been singing for years, that's the one I'll be singing until I'm gone. I've got more to do at my age, than to learn a new anthem. This wouldn't be such a hot issue, if the MP who is dying hadn't brought this up in the house. He wants the anthem to be changed to be more inclusive, and he wants it changed before he dies. There's talks about changing it, I think there may already be a version of the new anthem up for consideration.

Yes, that's the word that's come out after the fact...I was reacting to it as it happened...I'm still rather upset about the whole deal.

So it was one person who did it, and he should definitely be ashamed...

Strange things can happen Andrew . Several years ago when the Edmonton Triple A ball club was playing its final game against a US opponent in the league , they had invited a local TV personality/singer to perform the US anthem . She was a dual citizen , having moved to Alberta in her early teens if I remember correctly . I think she got through the first line , then totally blanked on the words . Somewhat embarrassed silence in the stadium , with no one knowing what to do next . She did recover after a few minutes , to a standing ovation . A wonderful story the way she tells it , I only remember the outline .

This happened at a Portland Trailblazer basketball game years ago. The girl forgot the lines to the National Anthem and the Blazers coach got up and helped her through it.

You're speaking to many people of many different Countries, with many different National Anthems.

I assume they refer to "O Canada". Specifying that in the original post may have clarified things a little but I think the important part of the post was what was done, not to whom it was done.

To the op; I find it outrageous that anyone would disrespect their National Anthem in that way. I hope all organizations that have a National Anthem played publicly take note of this and ensure it doesn't happen on their watch. Performing a National Anthem in your own style is expected, changing any of the words, imho, should never be tolerated. I hope the singer feels the repercussions of their choice for quite some time.

Excuse me while I step off my soap box now.

I don't think it matters which anthem it happened to - any anthem should be respected...but yes, it was Oh Canada.

ANyone down there who watched the game likely missed it, as I hear Fox didn't even air our anthem on the US broadcast - which is another sour point for me.

Ah well, life goes on!

My understanding that Canada's version of the Right of Freedom of Speech is not as lenient as the USA. In the States the change could be considered Freedom of Speech. Then it becomes a case of we may not agree with it, but they also have their Rights to sing it like they want.

That is so wrong. Sport leagues should stay out of politics. Especially at special events.

O Canada is a beautiful anthem. I know all hell would have broken loose if they did it to the Stars Spangle Banner.

I'm sorry, but, I must disagree with you. Do you not remember the uproar that Rosanne Barr caused, when she slaughtered the U.S. national anthem at a ball game? And she did it because she didn't remember the words. This idiot singing the anthem the way he did, did it for political reasons. Are you trying to tell us that if this was done to Stars and Stripes, that there would be no backlash? I'm all for free speech, but, I'm not for gatherings being hijacked for political reasons. Especially a sports gathering, and in a foreign country that knows little of the issues in Canada.

That is horrible that someone took it upon themselves to use their own National Anthem at a sporting event to make a political point.

With that said, we Americans have become socially intolerant to anything other that our own opinion and it is disgusting. There isn't any middle ground anymore, it seems as if you are either left or right and whichever side you are not is 100% wrong. So yes, there would be uproar from multiple fronts if someone butchered our National Anthem.

It sickens me that there is such little respect for others that places like the Holocaust Museum and Arlington National Cemetery have to issue public statements to remind people not to play a stupid video game while on the premises. Smh.
