I just tried my sharpening jigs. I got the 4pc set from PSI for $114. I tried out the skew and it was just fine... pretty straightforward. But when I tried my fingernail jig... MAN! That is even harder than free-hand!

Can anyone give me any tips for using the fingernail jig? It feels like I have to really lay in there with it, and so that scares me. I can't really touch it to the wheel without CRAMMING it onto the wheel... it's like there is no middle. And the swinging motion I'm supposed to make is not as easy as it looks either. The point at the bottom keeps moving...

Is there a video or something out there? [V]

I teach a method for using that style of attachment that breaks the end of the gouge as 3 different zones. Sharpen one long side first, grind the second side next, then grind the nose and flare that into the two sides. It keeps you from wildly swinging the gouge back and forth. Attempt to get a slight convex arch on the side cutting edges. Spend as much time on the point as the sides. If you neglect the nose it will become too pointed.
