I know that I can turn inserts with wood or resin easily enough, but I've been thinking about using a gemstone cabochon to replace the rather plain inserts in the cap finials. They are about 11 mm and the cabs come in 10 or 12. Seems like filing the edges a little on a 12 would be better than figuring out how to fill the extra .5 mm empty space using a 10. That and it would probably fill the depth better without anything extra being needed under it. Has anyone done this with some success? If so, any tips or tricks?
