Hi, I'm Trevor from Dunlap, IL (by Peoria, IL) I just wanted to introduce myself and share my story of how I got started.

It all started with a grill utensil set from Rockler. I figured it would be fun to make and was planning on doing flat work on it. But then, my wife and I were going to see here aunt and uncle, and I know he had picked up a lathe the previous year. I have been wanting to try out lathe work, but didn't want to buy the tools without trying it first. So I figured this would be a good way to try it out. So my grill utensil handles are round, Started with a pencil kit to practice before doing the handles, made a foot massager for my wife, and now I'm hooked on turning. You all can thank Bob (BoJo) for introducing me to the lathe and this site.

Hopefully in the next couple weeks I can get my lathe set up after it arrives on Tuesday along with a bunch of other stuff. But first I better finish the remodeling in the basement. Only drywall, painting, flooring and the ceiling left. Should be done by the end of the month. But then again, I probably won't wait to play with the new tools that long.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's post and found them to be more harmful then helpful (in a good way). Now Instead of making pens, I want to get into casting side of things and see if I can match the quality and creativity of what is out there. I think I'm too creative for my own good. Time to start the downward spiral of turning and trying to get the ideas out of my head and into pens.

Thanks,

Trevor

Trevor,
You will soon find yourself with a nice collection of pens and possibly other items for which people will be happy to part with enough $$ to keep you on the slippery slope that is our world. Welcome!

Trevor,

Welcome to our group. Foot massager with a lathe? Pictures, please. No, not of your wife's feet, it isn't that kind of group!

I can't picture what you made, and it has me curious.

Welcome Trevor. Join in the fun and keep posting. Great looking foot massager too! Make some pens and post some picts.

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome from Oklahoma. My suggestion is don't even take the lathe outta the box til you get the remodeling done. You'll never finish it if you start turning. Have fun.
