Hi Lin, you will have a really great day with Jimmy. I took a couple of courses with him in the UK and really enjoyed them. He has to be one of the best instructors around, such a shame the UK lost him to you lucky guy's in the States.
See some of my Clewes inspired pieces on his website.
Your in for a great time. Watch he don't set you on fire. I spent 4 days with him here near Tampa 3 years ago. I did hands on for 3 days I think there was 5 or 6 of us. He's great around people, very relaxed, and funny also. Then he did a demo for a few of the local wood clubs (There were over 150 in attendance that day)
Here's a photo of me and Jimmy. I'm holding (Jimmy has one) what I learned and made in the class.
The photo below is from the last big demo. day. Look close above the platter on the lathe. You can see flames, as he sands through the numbers he wets the wood with alcohol then immediately sets it to fire raising the grain for the next grit. It was hard to capture the fire in a photo.
I learned a LOT from him love his style and I been making winged bowls since.
Jimmy was turning a rather large blank at our Seminar (Susquehanna Woodturners) and found a worm in the wood,,, with his gouge,,,, his comment brought the house down. "Glad I wasn't talking at that moment!" He did have to stop and clean his shield too!
My dad got a gift certificate to attend one of his courses. He had a lot of fun. Someday I'll attend as well but I imagine it will have to wait until after the next kid is born and maybe one or more are in school (so they don't drive LOML crazy!).
Well the 1st day was fantastic, all 7 in attendance had fun and loved Jimmy. I unfortunately have torn my rotator cuff and cant hold the tools. At the end of the day we lost power due to high winds but everyone went home with a finished piece. New crew tomorrow and another fun day I am sure.
He was going to be at the local Woodcraft, but they had to cancel due to lack of interest. (not Woodcraft or Jimmy's fault none in this state will commit to anything more than 12 hours in advance) I was looking forward to it.
Well it was a fun weekend with Jimmy. With that many people in my shop it sure creates a hell of a lot of dust. Here are the fruits of his weekend with us.
Ahhh those look familiar I see he did some dieing Did he show you his flaming sanding technique He's a fun guy, fun to talk to, also Love that British accent
