Dear all:

Question for you guys that know tools. I have a person who advertised thorugh a local turning club some equipment for sale. I have been looking for each of these and was going to purchase them over the course of the next few years, but if they are a good deal I might hop on them sooner. Here is what he has - Jet WBS-14 band saw ($450),3 piece Robert Sorby small bowl tools ($75), and a Delta 12" Planer ($175). Are any of these worth it? I am attaching a picture file if it helps..

Thanks for you input!
Kevin

If I were looking for these tools I would be over there right now. I would like to have that lathe. How much is he asking for that.??

He didn't say. I would love to have it too, but I just bought a Delta 46-460 and I don't have a place to put it. If you're willing to travel to the Midwest this week, I will ask him...or send you his email and you can ask him. I will even help ya load it :)

Too far for me to come, but hey if you need a holiday bring it with you and come to Vancouver Is and I will put you up for free.

Seems like the Surface Planer might be high...I have seen them for a 100.00 to 125.00 a couple times...what does everyone else think?

That is what I was thinking too Mike

(PS - I am from Conroy (Williamsburg area), Iowa originally - nice to see someone from Eastern Iowa on here - managed a restaurant in the Amanas before moving to Kansas)

Some of the tool prices are on the maximum side for selling used. I've seen the bandsaw for $350-$425 with a fence I believe. The Sorby's seem to be at the right price. The planer is selling around here for $100-$150.

Make them an offer for the package. You can usually get a deal that way and the seller moves all the tools at once.

Good luck.

Kevin is pretty much on target about the tools being at the top end of the price range. The band saw is probably 15+ years old. I bought one brand new at Rockler about five years ago for $450. Same model, closed base better table. If you can get the saw for a good price, $250-$275, then look into some Carter upgrades for it. You can really make a great saw out of that with a little elbow grease and some more money.
