The all offer various rest . . . . .
 
Go to Lee Valley... they have a nice set that is interchangeable..i.e., you can buy 4", 6", etc. and a separate post. I bought a set of cross bars in various sizes and a post for the Jet mini plus a post for my Jet 1442... unscrew the bar from one post and screw it on another....

I have the Lee Valley one for my 1220, which is actually the Sorby set, for mandrel-less turning and like. It is pretty nice but it takes some getting used to to have the circular tool rest directly over the post without the slight offset that many tool posts have.

I think if I really am going to use it a lot, I should use that style all the time. Switching tool rest styles gets confusing as you need to adjust your technique slightly every time.
 
I have a modular tool rest that I got from Rockler and it is similar to the ones on the Sherrill website. I really like how the tools just slide along so easily on the slick rod.
 
I make my own but 4" is too long for me. I turn one barrel at a time so I made one 2 1/2" that's just right.
I just looked at that Sherrill website and those are EXACTLY how I make them. That's also not a bad price for the set.

I got it because I wanted some smaller rests for my Jet 1442... it takes a 1" post. I like them but problem I find is the post is a little taller than I want, and there is a cross bar or stop in the banjo that doesn't allow the post to drop far enough. I need to cut the length down some... not sure if I have the tools to hack saw off a 1" piece of steel.

The extra post for the Jet 1014 works perfectly... I can drop the tool rest all the way down to the cross bar.

I plan to buy the outside bowl rest next... I didn't get it when I ordered the set.
 
The best rests I've used are the Robust Comfort Rests (CSUSA sells them too). They're a bit price, but they provide both solid tool support and a comfortable hand position. I've got a set of t-bar rests, theste work great on larger stuff, but I can't get them close enough to the blank on my 1642 - there's no offset and the banjo doesn't travel far enough.
 
I have a Jet 1220. I've been wanting a shorter tool rest that the 6" one also. I ordered two of the 6" ones from the Jet warehouse. Was just a little shocked to find the price was only $8.87 each plus shipping. Cut one down tonight to 4". Was much easier than I had anticipated using a Dremel cut-off disc. Stil have one to make a shorter one yet. I really like the curve of the orginal rest and the price really is right.
