I purchased a small Jet Pen Lathe a couple of years ago from Rockler, but I can't find them any more. They usually ran about $75-$125. I have a friend with a son in high school that wants to begin turning. Does anyone know where I could find one that is still in good condition?

They don't sell them retail any more. Jet stopped selling them quite a while back. I heard too many problems and inability to find usable accessories for it.
I had one when I first started. Recently traded it to someone who wanted to use it for traveling. For a little more money, he or she can get a good beginners lathe. There are a lot of new, good minis out there now. The pen lathe used a #0MT and was very diff to find accessories for. This limited you a lot as to what you could do with it.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck and be sure to get your friend to join IAP.[}:)]

You can buy a Wilton lathe from Amazon.com for about $100 and frequently with free shipping. This is a lot better value for the dollar unless you "ABSOLUTELY" need to compact size of the Pen Lathe. They do show up every so often....you might keep an eye out on eBay. I. too, owned a JPL at one time but sold it because it had such limited capability

I have a brand new JPL for sale for $100 locally. It is exactly what I paid for it and it comes with a small tool set and if someone was interested I would include some blanks and a few kits for a newturner. But Randys idea is a good one, getting a Wilton lathe to start on is a good one. I only mention this in case someone actually wants only a small pen lathe.

I understand the value in the larger lathe...I have three different sizes. However, I only turn my own pens on the JPL. I have never had any issues finding mandrels or parts. However, Woodcraft and Rockler are both within driving distance. I also don't want to get the CA on my larger lathes.

Thanks for the Wilton idea. Hadn't thought about that.

You may if you decide to use a JPL.

I just lay a towel or rag down and don't have a problem with glue or any thing else on my lathe.

Craftsman sells a similar pen lathe that is a MT1. I had one and it served me well until I could afford a JET mini. I think the Craftsman also comes with a small tool set as well IIRC.
