I have a Jet Mini 1014VS that is usually mounted on a rolling stand. In the process of moving a bunch of stuff around the shop to take pictures for a woodworking mag article, I knocked it off the stand when it was unbolted and it took about a 3-4 foot drop and landed on the chrome handwheel on the headstock. The handwheel does not have any runout so I don't think I bent anything. However, when I fire it up the bearing in the headstock is howling like mad. Have any of you replaced the bearings in the headstock? How hard was it? Any caviats? Recommendations on where to buy the parts?[V]

Thanks in advnace for your responses.

You Might try loosening the hand wheel and backing it off a smidge. It may have bumped the spindle into the bearing some. Or, if you have a dead blow or big plastic mallet, screw the face plate on the spindle and then hit it dead center a couple of times. May knock things back the right direction. If those don't work, I think you can just take the hand wheel off and bump the spindle out from the back. May have dented the sheild on the bearing.

Are you sure it it the bearings that are making the noise?? Maybe it it the handwheel rubbing against the headstock casting. Try loosening the set screws that hold the handwheel on the spindle and pull it back away from the head stock by a tiny bit and see what happens. Even easier, just put a drop of oil on the joint between the handwheel and the headstock casting and see if that makes any difference in the sound of the noise.

I took the headstock apart tonight. Pretty simple. One of the bearings has a noticable problem turning by hand. I located replacement bearings by the number stamped on the side. McGuire Bearing in Seattle has 300 of them in stock. I'll let you know how it turns out.

A 2hr. road trip to pick up the bearings, 15 minutes to put 'em in and back in business. It was not this quiet when i first bought it. I guess I should have knocked it on the floor sooner. [:D]

FYI my bearing numbers where: 6004LB and 6005LB.
