My bearings say 6004 NSE and 6005 NSE. Do they have to have NSE after them? I found some on line that had 2RS or ZZ after them. Another site had some that looked like they were for Yamaha motorcycles and some snow mobiles. Any help on this would be great. Thanks Doug

The letters are what the outer seals are. RS means Rubber Seal, the other NSE, I think is No Seal. But I belive the 6004 and 6005 is the important part. I may be wrong.

Different companies use different codes. The 6004 and 6005 numbers are size designations and are standard throughout the industry. The letters are designations for the shielding and vary from vendor to vendor. What you want is a "double shielded" bearing. IIRC, ZZ is a designation for a double shielded bearing; but there are other codes that mean the same thing. JET uses the designation "VV."

Shielding is critical to lathe bearings as you need to keep out all of the dust and dirt or the bearings will fail prematurely.

Wouldn't the double black rubber seal do this? IE 6004RS & 6005RS

The bicycle industry uses the RS bearings with success.

I would think the seals would be fine for lathe use.

I don't know the answer to that question. Maybe someone will pop in who does?

I could speculate that the shielding requirements are different for a bearing that spins at 4000 RPMs versus one that spins at only a few tens of RPMs. Might also have to do with the environment. Bicycles frequently get wet.
