Bought a Jet 16/40 recently so I need to get a 1.5 inch MT2. Preference is a 4" chuck since probably not doing anything bigger than a bowl.
Never priced for one so I'm "turning" to you folks for an info or advice you have found to work for you. I recognize and appreciate that each craftperson has partcilar ways and methods to achive the product so don't be shy.
Thanks to all,
Barry Nelson

Barry, not sure what you mean about needing a 1 1/2" MT2. The head stock spindle on this lathe is a fairly standard 1 1/4 inch by 8 tpi. A good chuck for this lathe can be had from Nova, Vicmark and others. Might check with a local Woodcraft store or Rockler. Good luck in your search.

With chucks you get what you pay for. The things you need to think about:

Adapter Insert or NO; this threads into the back of the chuck and that means the chuck can be used on lathes with different spindle threads. A different adapter needed, and it isn't something you want to do every day.

Jaws; Chuck jaws are normally NOT interchangeable between manufacturers and families. 3-5 sets of jaws can cost more than the chuck body.

One exception to the "You get..." is that in the past year or 2 there was a great deal on a chuck for under $100 floating around the internet.

I might suggest keeping an eye out for clearance sales on Nova chucks. Woodcraft, Rockler, and a few others stores have been running closeout specials on various Nova chucks - which in my mind are excellent chucks. Nova has been replaced by Rikon chucks in these stores, and they have a very close similarity in look and feel to the Nova's - so much so most of the jaw sets are interchangeable between them. The sales are giving you a quality chuck - like the Nova G3 Lite at roughly half the previous sale price.

Axminster and OneWay also make really great chucks - allowing you to size the chuck to the work you intend on turning, as they offer 'lite' versions all the way to BIG chucks for larger items.

I prefer insert chucks, as I can switch the insert when needed to accommodate other lathe size threads as need for demo's or changing machines in my own shops.

+1 on the Nova G3.

Watch ebay as well. I got mine in a kit with multiple jaws new for a nice price.
