Hi,

My Shopsmith blew a sheave bearing, so with a good sale on and my birthday coming up I figured it was a good time to move to the Jet 1220VS lathe.

I have read the reviews that I found with the search function, and just wondered if anyone has had any recent experience with the 1220VS good or bad.

Also, the manual lists the speed from 250-4000, but does not break down the speed ranges with respect to belt positions. From the manual it looks like there are 3 belt positions. Can anyone tell me the approximate speed range for each position?

Woodcraft has it for $560 with free shipping. They also have the Delta 46-460 for $650 plus a $50 rebate and a $30 gift card. Not sure what shipping would run. Any thoughts on whether the Delta is better? It has a shorter spindle length, but a 1HP motor compared to 3/4 for the jet, plus a reverse switch.

Thanks

I don't have either one, but there are a lot of good things said about both machines so I don't think you'll regret going either way.

I have a 1014vs and the speed breakdown is

I have had my 1220VS for a little over 2 years and have no complaints, it's a real workhorse.
Here is a scan of the speed chart from my owners manual.

i have booth and would recommend the delta, the speed range over laps a lot and the belt doesn't have to be change that often, i never do to turn pens the the top speed for turning and then i turn the dial to 3 for the finish. the larger motor and reversible is nice. the problem with my jet is the bearing, they wear out in less than a year, this has been a problem with other jet tools also.

Well I just pulled the trigger on the Jet. Found one local, I just need to get there before 5 to pick it up (my boss shouldn't notice). It is the last one they have in stock. Every other place told me it would be about 10 days if I had it shipped. That means I can finish the brush for the shaving set I am making for my show on Saturday!:bananen_smilies051:

Thanks for all the info.

I just upgraded to the Jet 1220vs about 2 weeks ago. I'm loving it so far! It is spot on. Belt changes are super easy and fast. it's also got a 5 year warranty on it, which is some nice piece of mind. I was looking at the Delta 46-460 and was told it was on back order until mid December. I have no regrets with the Jet so far...well I wish i got it on sale lol...

WOW!! I just got my Jet together and did a couple of quick cuts. It is amazing! I thought my Shop Smith was okay, but this is so smooth and quiet. I think I am going to be very happy.

Why not replace the bearings in the shopsmith?

I will eventually, but you have to replace the whole sheave assembly and from the looks of things the speed changing mechanism. With all the parts it will be around $100 and a full tear down of the power head. I have had a small lathe on my wish list for a while, so the bearing together with the sale Jet is having was a good reason to go for it now so I could be up and turning right away.

If you have not been to the shopsmith forums http://shopsmith.net/forums, I highly recommend them. Lot's of good information on all types of Shopsmiths and lots of very knowledgeable, helpful, friendly people there. Post some pics of your machine and clearly identify your issues, and these guys can help you get it up and running in no time.
