For those who use a Jacobs Chuck......what size would you think is best between the 1/2" and the 5/8".

I've checked both out at WoodCrafts and went with the 1/2" as I think that would be more than enough for what I do. Has anyone here ever found a use for anything bigger than the 1/2"? If so, what was that use?

Thanks,

Barney

I've got the 5/8 chuck - actually two of them since I put one on my drill press last year. Since most drills over .5" come with .5" shanks I don't think the bigger chuck is necessary, just nice to have.

I bought a genuine Jacob's chuck a while ago, but returned after finding the run out was.004", compared to .001" on my cheap Woodcraft "Golden Goose" model that cost 1/3 as much. I got the 1/2" model.

A VERY FEW of my larger, metric bits won't fit in the half inch. I bought them years ago to make kaleidoscopes and other projects. Today, they are probably available ground down to fit half inch.

But, when I grab one, I am grateful for the 5/8.
