Jacobs chuck question

I'm just having chuck questions today! I'm trying to make a compact top using a mandrel from PSI. I'm trying to hold the mandrel in a jacobs chcuk. I wanted to use my Beall, but the mandrel stem is too small to fit inside one size and too big to be held in the next size up. So I had to use the jacobs. But as soon as I touch a tool to it, it starts spinning out of the hole. How can I get it seated so that that won't happen? Or are there other sizes of the Beall collets that I need to buy? I got the set that had five or so different sizes in it to start with.

Many ER32 collet chucks that you may purchase to fit the appropriate work. As a temporary measure why not build up your mandrel stem with masking tape and then use the best fitting collet chuck. Should work and good luck.

ER32 collets are made in various sizes and the size interval is 1mm for metric collets and 1/32" for fractional collets. I bought an 11 collet set on eBay for $50 + shipping. Lots of people here at IAP have purchased from this same seller and all(that I know of) have been satisfied with the quality of the collets. Sadly, the guy is sometimes slow to ship and never answers emails so the transaction can be frustrating. For this reason, I am not going to post the sellers name; but will give it to you privately if you want it.

Past IAP threads have mentioned some other economical sources for ER32 collets. If you just want to purchase an individual collet for your "top" mandrel, you can do that too and should be able to find one for $5-$10; not the $20 that a Beall collet will cost you.

I don't recall the names of any of the Internet collet sources; but a search of the old IAP threads may turn up something or someone with a better memory than mine will come along.

Oh yeah, forgot about that question. To solve that problem, you will need to use a draw bar to hold the chuck in the spindle or leave a little extra wood on the end of your turning and put a live center in the tailstock. When your turning is complete, you can part off the excess. It will require a little hand sanding; but folks do it all of the time.

Note: Not all Jacobs chuck arbors will be drilled and threaded to accept a draw bar so this option may not be available to you.

The link that Dario posted "IS" the seller that I was referring to. I did not want to post his name or a direct link because so many people have found him difficult to deal with.

The guy's feed-back rating is marginal as far as I am concerned and even many of the positive comments mention slow shipping(30 days) and impossibly poor communications.(meaning none at all) If you are willing to deal with these potential headaches to make a pretty good financial savings, then go for it.

But, you have been warned!!

The above comment may be a little misleading and needs a point of clarification. The 11 collet set that I purchased was in size increments of 1/16". For most people this size increment should be just fine; but understand that the grip "RANGE" of these collets is only about 1mm or slightly more than 1/32" so there will be gaps in the grip range if your collets are in 1/16" increments. If you do a lot of work with metric sized materials, there will be some sizes that won't fit and you will be better served by a larger set in 1/32" increments.
