WARNING: If you aren't interested in wading through a rambling, whiny post, this is your chance to turn around.
We knew going in that this fall was going to be a very busy time for us. We've been getting the house in shape to put on the market so we can build a new one. Of late, we had made several upgrades and repairs and had just finished painting inside and out. All that was left was decluttering. We sent two pianos off to climate controlled storage and took the first load of stuff to regular storage. We were working full steam to pack up tons of other stuff and get it to storage, as well as prepare for a yard sale and throw away lots of stuff.
The new property was picked out. It sits on a hill which gives a great view of the surrounding area and allows for a full walk-out basement. We put a contract on the property. We just had to get our house on the market and sold. Our realtor was confident that we could get it sold quickly at a good price.
While the house stuff was happening, we also had other things on our plate. Two toddlers running about doesn't allow for much free time, but we were preparing for the first big show of the season, a three-day art show that we had worked several years to get into. This was year one for us at this very good show and our first show of the holiday season. We were to set up for the show on the last Thursday of September and sell Friday through Sunday. Wednesday had other plans.
I discovered water running down one of our interior walls. Awesome. The plumber would come on Thursday.
I met up with my wife after work that Wednesday. The kids were asleep in her Trailblazer, so we decided to take a drive, rather than to take them home and disturb their naps. We wandered over to the new property and then were going to hit the grocery store, as the kids were waking up and we needed some grub for a quick and easy dinner. We never made it to the grocery store. On the way, we were met by a car that crossed the center line and hit my wife's SUV head on.
Our youngest, Jake, was basically uninjured. Out two-year-old, Sarah, injured her elbow and somehow got bruised on her forehead, but was pretty much fine. I walked away with a cracked rib, sprained tailbone, tweaked knee, and badly sprained ankle. My wife wasn't as lucky. She suffered an open ankle fracture, three broken ribs, and some traumatic injury to her liver. She may walk by Christmas. She can't come home because our house doesn't have a full bath on the main floor and every entry requires the navigation of three or four steps, so she's staying at her parents' house for now. The kids miss their Mommy and she misses them. I take them to spend time with her every day, but that's not the same when you're just a couple years old (or when you're a mom of the toddlers).
The plumber came and fixed the pipe. Eventually, I'll get somebody to come out and repair the big hole he left in the ceiling. Nothing else has happened with the house, of course. Who has the time? Our contract on the land expired and we likely will lose it. The show went on without us as did another and so will the rest of the shows this year. Maybe we will be able to get back in most of them next year.
