My Mother-in-law passed away last January. Her name was Muriel. I came across this and was going to make my wife a pen with a decal of the cigar band.

I am sorry for your loss. But to your question, in my opinion there are plenty other ways to honor her than a cigar. When i think of a cigar I think of victory. I guess in some small way there is some irony there. Such as she celebrated life her way. But maybe a photo of her casted with some momento or her favorite saying or something that stood out with her. Maybe use her favorite colors or have a family photo included. Some people like to cast watches that the person wore. Many ideas which you probably will get.

Again sorry for your loss.

Some people think cigar smokeing is a disscusting habbit, others think of it as a pure pleasure. Your pen will be seen by both sides of the line, each will take away their own view of your pen, and deside if it represents their memory of your Mother-in-law or not. Some will look at it as a great tribute to her, others will not. You can only try to please one person !! your wife. Talk over your ideas about the pen with her and see if she is comfortable with having it as a reminder of her mother or not. Personaly, I would make something a little more feminine as John T suggested above. Maybe her favorite flowers, colors, or a beautiful Silver or Gold cross cast into the pen. Remember, when your wife looks at, or shows someone the beautiful pen you have made in her mother's memory, you want her to reflect on the good times they spent together. Sorry for you and your wife's loss. Great thought however !! Jim S
