Is this a 60 dregree live center?

I'd like to get a 60 degree live center but my tool budget is at it's limit. I saw this one at Grizzly and seems to be very inexpensive at $11.95 compared to others but it doesn't actually say if it is 60 degrees. Does anyone know? Their other ones say they are 60 dgrees but this one doesn't say.

I have this live center, yes it is 60 degrees (just went to the shop and measured it).

Yes, they will tell you the truth. Those sold along with woodworking/turning tools are soft. Spend a little bit more and get one from the machine tool portion of the store, or catalog. Those are hardened and will last. BTW, the 60 degree thing is so standard it is not specified. There is some historical reason why 60 degree is standard, but I don't know the story.

Have you tried enco if your budget is tight. The following link has them, I think I would get the Bearing Steel or the Enco Carbide Tipped for about the same price.

I chose to buy the soft steel one. I can replace it seven or eight times for the cost of the othern.

Something tells me that I'll never need to replace it that many times.

I think if you check out the Grizzly catalog, you will find the difference is about double. Good economy, IMHO.

The othern was the othern linked to in this thread. I didn't check the prices for every live center sold everywhere.

I picked up a live center with a 6 piece variety of tips.. one a 60 deg, one a cup that fits perfectly over the end of my homemade buffing system allthread, plus others that I probably don't know what to do with yet.. I think the set was about $50.

Those are made for wood. I fear you will get wear on the tips almost immediately and be dissapointed with your choice. Hope I'm wrong. Let us know.

Yesterday, I checked the tip of my 'soft steel' Grizzly 60 degree center. It's fine. I can't feel any wear.

Jim, I have used the same model for years and no sign of wear. Years ago, it was the preferred choice for pen turners.
