Can you Texans or former texans helpe out here? My stepson who is just out of college, just moved to Dallas for his new job with Texas Instruments. One of his passions outside of electronics is beer. He fancies himself a beer connoisseur. Fortunately for mine, and my wife's peace of mine he's a very responsible drinker. Anyway, we were talking to him on the phone today, and he was complaining that there are very limited options in Dallas for buying beer other than the big name domestic varieties. It's been a culture shock for him since we live near Philadelphia where you can not only get an unlimited variety of micro brews, but almost any foreign beer you want.

Is he just a Texas newbie and don't know where to look, or is he going to have to start drinking Bud?

Tell him there is a restaurant in Garland which has several choices. The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium - www.beerknurd.com

I was under the impression that it was a cardinal sin punishable by slow hanging to drink anything other than "Lone Star" there. WOW! Times have changed! Just uttering "Bud" could get one flogged.

You might suggest to him that he stop into a "home brew" store. Not only do many of those stores carry hard to find beers, but they also will have people there who can tell him about local microbrews that would be worth trying. And who knows? He might even decide to give home brewing a try....that's the way to make a beer that's just perfect for him, or satisfy an ever-changing taste preference.

third place down is a beer store... has good rating too... (94!) cant speak for it personally as its pretty far from home, but whenever i travel, before we leave home i always check ratebeer to find the top rated shop in the city where im heading... so far it has proved effective, although sometimes expensive.. ;) try explaining to customs how 18 bottles of beer can cost as much as a few 24s when you come back into canada... they never really believe it

as a fellow beer geek i wish him good luck in finding some good brews!
