I've never turned either of them, so I wouldn't know-- but I've only just now noticed the striking similarities.

Are they clones of each other (like the Atlas and Patriot are) or are they just visually similar?

The baron tubes are the same size as the jr gent V1. The bushings are the same except for the one for you use for the threaded end cap. The baron is slightly larger. Reed

Redfish, I have made several of each, and I dont know if I consider
one superior over the other, but there are some different plating options with the Barons, such as copper and satin nickel. However they have changed the tips on the Jr. Gent II, and I dont care for
the more rounded look, so I much prefer the tips on the Barons, so
those might be some things to keep in mind.

Which of the two would you consider superior?

I like the Baron much more than the Gents Jr. Reason is that it has so many plating choices and there are no problems with the threads. There were quite some problems with the threads of the Gents Jr.
I like the refills (Schmidt) in the Gents better, though.

I would take a round nib holder over a hex one if I were making one formyself.
That being said I have not made the Gent version from CSUSA.
The Baron is a beautiful pen but the part you write with is about the same size as a standard slimline.Making it a funny shape doesn't improve it to hold.
I wish they would redesign it or offer a comfortable larger nib holder.
