internet sites that skim your credit card

Looks like mostly small volume commerce sites that can;t afford the big gun IT to protect themselves. It's getting to be a sad, sad world.

In case it helps anyone, I use "one-time" credit cards whenever I order anything online or over the phone. The credit card company has a website, and I login to create a new credit card number. The new credit card number has a limit and an expiration date that I choose. I can also create a card for recurring payments up to twelve months, so that "memberships" expire under my control and are not automatically renewed.

It used to be available from nearly all credit cards in the US. Sadly, the only credit card company in the US that still offers the feature is Bank of America, which calls it "ShopSafe." Worse yet, ShopSafe runs on Adobe Flash, which is notorious for security issues. Flash is built-in and kept updated in the Google Chrome browser, which I use only for ShopSafe and another Flash website. I do not install Flash on my computer. Flash will be discontinued and unsupported by Adobe next year (2020), and I have no idea whether BofA will implement ShopSafe in a non-Flash version. I will continue to use it until it goes away.

Finally, this is not a good idea if you are not strong on computer security. If a hacker gets on your online credit card account and password, they can generate their own credit card numbers, too.

Disclaimer: I have no relationship with BofA, other than as a customer who uses their credit cards and the ShopSafe feature.

My dad had something similar to this years ago. He had a USB dongle that he had to plug in to use it.

I have bought from the appliance parts website, but it was about six years ago, and the credit card I used then is long gone.

I setup my CC account so that I get a text message and an email whenever the card is used.
Has come in handy when I knew I wasn't in California going to a movie.

I get an email whenever my card is used as well. For online purchases I use paypal. I have it linked to a bank account in a different bank than my daily use one. Never any more than about $50 in it unless I am getting something. If I want to purchase something online and they don't have paypal I look elsewhere.

I just look at the CC statement each month and mark off the ones I know are valid. Sometimes the wife has a better memory than me.

I have the same feature on my "AT&T Universal Card" (issued by CitiBank) and use it for all online transactions.

Are you still using it? I have a Citibank card and it is not available any longer. One time cards have not been available for years; not from my Citibank card.

Yes, mine is still in use. I just checked - most recent virtual card created and used mid-April. (I wish they'd make it available on the Costco Visa cards too, that gives 3% cash-back!)

I got skimmed by a worker behind the register at a Fatburger in Sunset Station. I found out because we have alerts for our cards so that everytime they are used we get a text. I think all credit card companies have this and I for the life of me do not know why everyone does not use this feature unless they do not have a phone or computer.
