These are complex holes dug into the bottoms and sides of optically clear Brazilian quartz crystals using diamond bits on a Foredom flex shaft with a foot pedal - best to work outside to avoid silicosis (still using a respirator mask) - silicon effluent flushed with a water drip and jetted out with a WaterPik. The viewing facets are finished on lapidary discs ending with cerium oxide polish.
Like lathe-turning, internal microsculpture is a pleasant subtractive exercise guided by brain, hands, play of light, and imagination.
These were commissioned by one of the CA Academy of Sciences scientists:
Coral reef seascape with amphiprion percula (clownfish), sea anemone, sea star on brain coral, sponges, and a little crab approaching the foreground
Stegosaurus
Reading chair and table with fossilized moss inclusion
Best regards, Bob
