Hi all -
continuing down the custom pen well - I have been adding ink windows and clip finials using an epoxied tenon. But watching a maker I like, I see that he is using a threaded tenon. My question - if using a standard Jowo 6 nib and working to a final body diameter of say 6 mm, what size threads would you suggest for an ink window tenon? Same question for the clip finial using an 'R'clip from Beafort?

Appreciate your thoughts.

I've only made a couple of pens with ink windows. I didn't thread either of them, just a rebate & tenon epoxied in place.

For clip finials, I use the same threading as for the section/barrel joint - started with M9x0.75 but migrated to 3/8" UNEF for that little extra strength in the wall around the cartridge/converter.

Thank you Duncan (and all other replies)......somewhere along the way, I seem to have purchased a M9x.075 tap and die, so will give that a shot first, but I like the thinking behind the 3/8 UNEF.

I epoxied up a couple ink windows and put a decent sized tenon on them - which I thought would be fine, but I saw John Tello doing a quick reel that showed the windows having a tenon on either side, so thought I would try it. I'm working on a fully clear demonstrator so I can get some dimensions down for a custom design, so more than willing to try some different things as I go. I poured some Thermoset in clear and a few with a transparent light coloring to play with some techniques, with the clear allowing me to get a good handle on tolerances in parts. We shall see.

I vaguely remember the 3/8" UNEF die I bought had a long chamfer both sides (others I could flip around to run the threads closer to the end of the tenon). I was ordering something else from Rick Herrell at the time and asked him to mill the back of it for me - works like a champ now 👍
